from the California Preservation Foundation. The Garden Conservancy became involved in 2003, spearheading the rehabilitation of the heritage gardens on The Rock: now a National Historic Landmark …
and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 22-acre island, part of the National Park Services Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is the GGNRA’s most visited site, with some 1.3 million annual visitors hopping a ferry ride from San Francisco to see Alcatraz first-hand.
I enjoyed your new blog and I like the name, as well. Alcatraz Gardens look like a wonderful place to visit!
Thanks, Amy. I’m heading into S.F. today to enjoy the beautiful Ferry Building & Farmers Market. Won’t make it to Alcatraz, but another day;-)
Congratulations on your new blog. Alcatraz Gardens is a lovely garden. I can see the beautiful sea in the background. Definitely hope to visit it one day.
I had no idea there were such lovely gardens there. I admit to being one of those terrible locals who has actually never set foot on Alcatraz. I’ve always taken it for granted. I lived in the East Bay for years, used to work in downtown SF, I’ve even sailed around the island. Just never set foot on it. I’m really going to have to remedy that. Thanks for such an inspiring post!
How exciting to see your new blog! Congratulations!
Love the new blog Alice and Alcatraz is definitely one for my list next time I visit the West Coast.
Get a load of those aeoniums!
Alice, I was there in the late 80’s and the grounds looked NOTHING like this! What a drastic, lovely change!
